The deadly wildfires that firefighters continued to battle Thursday in Southern California have created nightmarish scenes and anguish as more than 100,000 people in the region have been forced to flee their homes. There are at least five active fires in Los Angeles County and the ongoing struggle to contain the flames has inflicted significant damage.
At least five people are dead and thousands of homes, businesses and even iconic Hollywood landmarks are either threatened, damaged or already destroyed by what Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called a "firestorm" during a late Wednesday night briefing. Authorities warned more injuries and death are possible until the fires can be contained.
Given the danger still facing Southern California, and the emergency personnel and resources required to combat the wildfires, the local professional and college sports teams are also making alternative scheduling plans. The NHL already postponed the Los Angeles Kings game Wednesday night and the NFL may move the Los Angeles Rams' Monday night playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings away from SoFi Stadium if it's deemed necessary.

Swimmer Gary Hall Jr. loses home, Olympic medals in wildfires
Gary Hall Jr. said the wildfires still raging across the Los Angeles area came so quickly that he had to leave all 10 of his Olympic medals behind. The home he was renting in Pacific Palisades, California, and using as the base for his business was consumed by the fire, destroying almost all his possessions, Hall Jr. told the Sydney Herald.
"I did think about the medals. I did not have time to get them," Hall Jr. said. "Everyone wants to know did the medals burn? Yeah, everything burnt. It’s something I can live without. I guess everything is just stuff. It’ll take some hard work to start over. What can you do?"
Hall won back-to-back gold medals in the men's 50-meter freestyle at the 2000 (Sydney) and 2004 (Athens) Olympics. He also won three golds as a member of Team USA's relay teams in 1996 (Atlanta). In addition, he won three silvers and two bronzes during his Olympic career.

NFL could move Rams-Vikings playoff game to Arizona due to wildfires
The NFL is ready to move the wild-card playoff game between the Los Angeles Rams and Minnesota Vikings if it can't be safely played on Monday night at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
The league said in a statement Wednesday it is still preparing to play at the Rams' home stadium, but there are contingency plans in place to shift the game to State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, if necessary due to the destructive wildfires active in the region.
"The NFL’s priority is the safety of the Los Angeles community. We are grateful for the tireless efforts of the first responders. Our hearts are with Los Angeles and everyone affected by the fires," the statement read, in part. "We will continue to closely monitor developments in the area and will remain in contact with public officials, both clubs and the NFLPA."
Historic Los Angeles golf course in wildfire's path
One of the country's most historic golf courses, Riviera Country Club, is squarely in the fire's path. The home of the Genesis Invitational was moved into a mandatory evacuation zone with the blaze unable to be contained yet. The club is set to host its PGA Tour event from Feb. 13-16. The Genesis is considered one of the Tour's signature events.

Report: Kawhi Leonard steps away from Clippers to help family
Los Angeles Clippers star forward Kawhi Leonard has stepped away from the team in order to help members of his family who were forced to evacuate due to the Southern California wildfires, according to NBA insider Chris Haynes.
Leonard — who reportedly purchased a home in the hard-hit Pacific Palisades area in 2021 — will miss the Clippers' Wednesday night contest in Denver, and it is unclear when he will return to the team.
Los Angeles Kings game postponed
The Los Angeles Kings' game against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night was postponed, the NHL announced.
"In light of the devastating effects of the wildfires in the Los Angeles area, tonight’s game between the Los Angeles Kings and Calgary Flames at Crypto.com Arena, NHL Game No. 653, has been postponed," the NHL said in a statement issued Wednesday. "The thoughts of the entire NHL family are with the Kings, hockey fans and the people of the Los Angeles area during this difficult time."
The league added that a makeup date will be announced as soon as it can be confirmed.

The NFL on Thursday announced that, in the importance of public safeness, the Minnesota Vikings-Los Angeles Rams wild-card game on Monday night has been moved from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, to State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
The change of venue comes as Southern California is dealing with multiple wildfires.
"In the interest of public safety, Monday's Vikings-Rams Wild Card game has been moved from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA to State Farm Stadium, the home of the Arizona Cardinals, the NFL announced today," the statement read, in part.
"The decision was made in consultation with public officials, the participating clubs and the NFLPA."
With the game's venue being changed, its 8 p.m. ET start time will remain with ticket sales opening Friday.
Starting late Tuesday morning with a fire in Pacific Palisades, California, myriad wind-fueled blazes engulfed the greater Los Angeles area. The Eaton Fire (Altadena/Pasadena) and Hurst Fire (Sylmar) followed the Palisades Fire, but others have popped up, one of the latest igniting Thursday in the West Hills neighborhood, which isn't far from the Rams' Woodland Hills practice facility.
Following the Rams' practice on Thursday, the team canceled open locker room availability, NFL Network's Bridget Condon reported, so players could get home quicker as evacuation orders had begun in the area.
Across the Southland, five deaths have been reported, but officials say the toll is likely to be higher, while more than 5,000 structures have been burned, according to the L.A. Times, and more than 130,000 residents have been placed under evacuation orders, per the Associated Press.
Rams head coach Sean McVay addressed the media before Thursday's practice -- and prior to the West Hills fire, called the Kenneth Fire.
"Obviously, our thoughts and prayers are with everybody that's been affected by these fires," McVay said at the time. "It's one of those deals that almost doesn't feel real, but it certainly is real to the people that are affected. Praying that as many people are OK, and you just see the amount of people that are affected and it's one of those deals that it gives you perspective."
The blazes have impacted the Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers, who will play against the host Houston Texans on Saturday in an AFC wild-card game. The Chargers practice in El Segundo. With plumes of smoke taking over the skies throughout the region, air quality is a concern. Players at Chargers practice were seen taking part in Thursday's session wearing masks.
Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh on Thursday said his daughter Grace's home had to be evacuated.
"Heart goes out and abundant prayers to all those that have been affected by this tragedy," Harbaugh said, while donning a Los Angeles Fire Department hat. "Also, just been inspired greatly by the first responders, the firefighters and the residents that have pulled together, had each other's back. It's been tremendously inspiring.
"So, even though we've been on-mission ... abundant prayers and thoughts to all that are in this fight. You see neighbors on top of houses helping fellow neighbors, it's truly inspiring."
Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell, who was McVay's offensive coordinator from 2020-2021, offered his thoughts on the arduous situation when also speaking Thursday prior to the game announcement.
"Just wanted to express my and our organizational sadness for those affected by the devastating fires in Los Angeles," O'Connell said on Thursday. "You feel helpless watching it from here and you know how many people are being impacted. Definitely, Southern California, I hold near and dear to my heart. I have some friends that have lost homes and you just think about the impact it has on so many folks. Our prayers are with all those impacted and definitely with the brave first responders that are putting their lives on the line and working 24-hour shifts to try to help put this thing to end, which is on all our minds as we watch some of those things from afar."
Thursday's announcement will mark the fifth time the NFL has moved a game to the Arizona Cardinals' home stadium and the fourth to State Farm Stadium. It will be just the third time in league history that a playoff game -- excluding the Super Bowl -- will take place at a venue that was not the home team's stadium for any regular-season games. The previous were the 1936 NFL Championship and the 1945 NFL Championship.
The 10-7 Rams are the reigning NFC West champions and fourth seed in the NFC, while the Vikings, runners-up in the NFC North, are 14-3 and seeded fifth.
The game will be televised as scheduled at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN/ABC/ESPN+ and ESPN Deportes.

King Diamond brought his Saint Lucifer’s Hospital 1920 tour to the YouTube Theater in Inglewood, California on Friday, November 29, 2024 for an unforgettable night of metal.
Opening the show was Ventura, CA’s Night Demon, bringing their metal revival act that would have been right at home in the 80s with King Diamond or Mercyful Fate even though the band was formed in 2011. The band has often been compared to and shared the bill with NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) acts. They fit right in with Danish metallers King Diamond and got the crowd going. They opened the set with the title track off their 2023 release Outsider on Century Media and pummeled through a blistering 30 minute set.
Next up was the 80s thrash metal band Overkill. Another NWOBHM influenced band, Overkill sounded as tight as ever and kept up the momentum with the crowd. It was clear many in the audience was there for Overkill as much as they were there for King Diamond. They opened the set with the title track from this year’s Scorched album out on Nuclear Blast. They immediately launched into “Rotten to the Core” from 1985’s Feel the Fire. They played fan favorites spanning decades and ended their 45 minute set with a Subhumans cover. The crowd was in a frenzy in anticipation for King Diamond after the pure metal set from Overkill.
King Diamond’s stage show was perfection. The multi-level stage provided for layers of the theatrical production for the intricate set pieces King Diamond is known for. While the song didn’t make an appearance until the encore, King Diamond started his performance by stabbing a creepy Abigail doll, judging from the name on the coffin upon which she sat.
That definitely set the tone for the rest of the haunting performance and stage show that provided the metal soundtrack played by the backing band, which included Myrkur on guest vocals and keyboards. The only respite from the harmonious horror show was a pause to sing “Happy Birthday” to guitarist Andy LaRocque when introducing the band members.
A review doesn’t do this show justice. A King Diamond show is something that must be experienced in person at least once, if not many times.
