Los Angeles County firefighters are battling a second brush fire with a large potential for growth in the Eaton Canyon area near Altadena.
The fire, dubbed the Eaton Fire, was first reported at around 6:40 p.m. in the area near Altadena Drive and Midwick Drive above Altadena, according to Cal Fire and LACoFD crews. Early numbers from firefighters show that the blaze had engulfed about 200 acres of brush and was burning uphill, as noted by the Angeles National Forest on X.
Pasadena Fire Department crews say that significant wind in the area is causing the flames to act erratically and spread quickly.
Evacuation orders in place
As of 7:20 p.m. evacuation orders were issued for some people living in both Altadena and Pasadena. A full list of evacuations can be found here.
Fires rage across SoCal
About 40 miles to the west in the Pacific Palisades, a massive wildfire had already torched more than 2,900 acres and destroyed multiple buildings since first igniting Tuesday morning.
Southern California is currently in the midst of one of the worst wind storms the area has experienced in the last decade, according to the National Weather Service, who said that some areas could experience gusts of wind as high as 80 miles per hour, with the highest gusts reaching 100 miles per hour.
Firefighting resources across the region have already been stretched thin to the point that Los Angeles Fire Department has asked all off-duty firefighters to contact their department of communications to report if they're available to assist in the firefight.

PASADENA, CA — People affected by smoke from the Eaton Fire were advised Thursday by the Pasadena Public Health Department to remain indoors and avoid outside activities to prevent smoke and ash inhalation.
With wildfires posing a serious health concern for older adults, pregnant women, children and people with respiratory illnesses such as asthma, the department encouraged residents to take precautionary actions, according to Lisa Derderian, Pasadena's public information officer.
Some of the steps to assist with preventing smoke and ash inhalation include:
-- Shutting all windows;-- Turning off vents to the outdoors;-- Using portable air cleansers or purifiers indoors;-- Reducing physical activity;-- Wearing a well-fitted respiratory mask, gloves, long-sleeve shirts, and long pants while cleaning up ash;-- Avoid skin contact with ash and immediately wash it off if it comes into contact with your skin, with caution that some wet ash can cause chemical burns;-- Monitoring children and young adults and not allowing them to play with ash or be within proximity of ash-covered materials;-- Cleaning ash off pets;-- Seek immediate medical assistance if you are experiencing chest pain, tightness, or shortness of breath.
According to Derderian, the smoke from wildfires contains fine particles that irritate the lungs and heart when deeply inhaled, and emphasized that a high concentration of these particles can result in a persistent cough, runny nose, phlegm, wheezing, labored breathing, and eye irritation.

"Urban wildfires can lead to potentially greater risks to health because they often release more toxic pollutants due to the burning of synthetic materials like plastics and metals found in buildings," Derderian said in a statement.
"People who must work outdoors for long periods in areas with heavy smoke or where ash is present should wear a well-fitting N95, P100, or P110+ organic vapor respirator mask."
Derderian said that individuals with lung or heart complications should consult a physician before using a respirator, as wearing one can sometimes cause difficulty breathing.

Crews hope to make progress battling Los Angeles County's second-largest wildfire on Friday.
At least five people are dead and there have been a "number of significant injuries" since the Eaton Fire sparked in Los Angeles County on Tuesday, officials said.
The Eaton Fire, initially called the Close Fire, began before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Eaton Canyon near Altadena and Pasadena.
Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said Friday authorities still believe the fire has damaged or destroyed 4,000 to 5,000 structures.
The fire pushed toward Mt. Wilson on Thursday but did not damage the observatory there, Marrone said.
Still, a firefighter suffered a "significant injury" in a fall. He is hospitalized in stable condition.
About 13,956 acres have burned, as of Friday morning. That's up from 10,600 acres a day earlier.
In a hopeful sign, crews were able to reach 3% containment. Containment refers to a barrier, whether it be natural or man-made, that prevents a wildfire from spreading.
"Last night, firefighters responded to multiple service calls and worked to extinguish hotspots around structures. Aircraft were deployed for water-dropping missions along the northeast perimeter near Chantry Flats, where fire growth has been observed," Cal Fire said in an update. "Today the priority continues to be structure protection and fire line construction to increase containment on the East, North, and West flanks."
Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo said Wednesday that more than 100,000 residents were under evacuation orders and nearly another 100,000 under evacuation warnings. More than 27,000 structures were risk for areas under evacuation orders or warnings.
During an evacuation order, there is an immediate threat to livelihood. It is mandatory to evacuate in this case. An evacuation warning means that fire behavior could threaten nearby homes and businesses. During a warning, evacuations aren't mandatory, but they are encouraged.

Mandatory evacuations were issued for areas including East Altadena Drive, Kinneloa Canyon Road, Outpost Lane, Glen Springs, Coolidge, Miranda, Roosevelt, Veranda, Foxridge, Canyon Close, Grand Oak and Kenclare.

Eaton Fire evacuation centers
An evacuation center has been set up at the Pasadena Convention Center at 22 East Green Street in Pasadena. Parking is available in the structure across the street, at 155 East Green Street.
A small animal evacuation site has been set up at Baldwin Park Animal Care Center at 4275 Elton Street in Baldwin Park.
A large animal evacuation site is at the Industry Hills Expo Center at 16200 Temple.
The Pasadena Unified School District said all of its schools would be closed for the rest of the week due to the winds and fire. Five campuses in Altadena were damaged, the district said.

Joining from Merrill Lynch, Froloff brings more than 25 years of experience designing, implementing, and consulting on retirement plans for executives and business owners. Throughout his career, Froloff has worked to establish customized wealth management and investment strategies for his clientele with a focus on their unique goals and current financial circumstances. His expertise lies in retirement planning, and he is passionate about helping business owners and their families pave the way for retirement and beyond.
