A strong thunderstorm birthed a rare tornado on Friday evening near Paynes Creek in Tehama County, close to the Shasta County border, according to meteorologists.
Scientists will study video and weather information where the twister touched down in the wilderness, about 8 miles northeast of Dairyville and 10 miles east of Cottonwood, the National Weather Service said.
The tornado developed between 5:18 and 5:21 p.m., prompting the weather service to issue a tornado warning for both counties by 5:22 p.m. Reports came to the agency almost immediately from a weather "spotter," and webcams caught the event as it happened, said meteorologist Johnnie Powell at the weather service's Sacramento branch.
As of 8: 45 p.m., there were no reports the twister injured anyone, or that it damaged any homes or businesses, according to the Tehama County Sheriff's Office and Office of Emergency Services.
The North State has the dubious honor of having the first tornado of 2025 in California, possibly in the whole country, Powell said.
It was also the latest of at least 12 tornadoes spotted in Tehama County in 76 years, according to weather experts.

How a tornado grew over Tehama County
The thunderstorm that brought hail and heavy rain to the northern Sacramento Valley Friday evening, also triggered the twister, Powell said.
Tornadoes form when air, blowing in different directions, rises up in a thunderstorm and begins to spin, according to the National Center for Atmospheric Research.
The storm dissipated late Friday evening, Powell said, and the Redding area should be mostly dry this weekend and next week, with sunny skies.

How big and fast was the tornado?
Meteorologists have yet to learn how strong Friday's tornado was, and how fast the wind was, Powell said.
The weather service could announce those answers as soon as Saturday, but first scientists need to look at the extent of the damage in daylight, Powell said: Are there overturned trees? What does the tornado's path on the ground look like? Those things will give scientists the clues they need to come up with those answers.
"Even in Kansas, you have to wait" for tornado details, Powell said.
How many tornadoes formed over Northern California?
A tornado forming over the North State is a rare event, but not unheard of.
Tehama County had the most tornadoes — a total of 11 twisters — between 1950 and 2024, according to Golden Gate Weather Services consulting firm. Two of those tornadoes formed at the same time of year: Jan. 4, 2021. The most recent tornado reported by Golden Gate was on April 25, 2021.
All three twisters in 2021 were very weak (EF0 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale). That means the tornadoes' winds ranged between 65-85 mph, according to the weather service. At those speeds, EF0 tornadoes may knock a few shingles off a roof, damage gutters and push loose items like lawn furniture around. Compare that to the strongest tornadoes (EF5), with winds moving at more than 200 mph.

During the same 75-year period, one tornado was spotted in Siskiyou County and four in Lassen, but none spun their way into Shasta or Trinity counties, Golden Gate reported.
The county with the most tornadoes sightings (49) between 1950 to 2024 is also one of the most densely populated. It was Los Angeles County.

Calif. teen's body recovered after he swam out to help younger brother, search continues

Search teams found the body of one of two teenage brothers who was missing and presumed drowned in Thermalito Afterbay since mid-December.
Marine search and rescue units recovered the body of 19-year-old Andruw Cornett at 9:30 a.m. on New Year's Eve, according to the Butte County Sheriff’s office.
A pilot spotted the body while looking for the teens in the northern part of the afterbay at Thermalito Dam, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
The area is about 7 miles west of the Butte County town of Oroville, and 70 miles north of Sacramento.

Searchers and divers will continue looking for the body of 17-year-old Wesley Cornett, the sheriff said. Anyone with information regarding his disappearance can call investigators at 530-538-7671.
No one reported hearing from the two teens since Andruw Cornett called 911 to report his brother fell out of a kayak and into the afterbay on Dec. 14, 2024.
Teenage brothers had been duck hunting near Oroville
The brothers went duck hunting near the afterbay that chilly Saturday morning, according to the sheriff’s office and a Facebook post from April Clark, who is the mother of the two youths.
According to Clark — whose Facebook account says she lives in Olivehurst in Yuba County — Wesley Cornett kayaked out onto the afterbay’s waters to retrieve a fallen duck. The duck landed too far from shore, and the water was too deep, for the teen’s 8-month-old Labrador retriever puppy to swim out to get it, Clark posted on Facebook.
Wesley Cornett paddled a kayak onto the Thermalito Afterbay to retrieve the duck. The kayak capsized, and his brother, Andruw Cornett, called 911 for help. When the 911 operator said it would take time for rescuers to get to the afterbay, the 19-year-old said he was going to swim out to help his brother, Butte County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Megan McMann said.
“He’s a hero in my eyes,” Clark posted of her son Andruw on Facebook.
First responders continued searching the area in December, McMann said, along with volunteer dive teams.
Meanwhile, Clark posted social media pleas, asking for help finding the brothers and expressing hope they could still be alive. “Please pray for my family … I’m just a mom begging my boys are found safe,” Clark said on Facebook.
No one reported hearing from either teen over the past 2.5 weeks, said volunteer diver Juan Heredia of Stockton, founder of Angels Recovery Dive Team.
Heredia posted Facebook updates on the search — sometimes three times a day, promising he and other searchers wouldn’t give up.

After divers recovered Andruw Cornett’s body on Tuesday, Heredia repeated on Facebook his promise he’d keep looking for Wesley Cornett: “18 days ago, I said that I won't stop the search/diving until both boys are out of the water. We (are) still missing one… The family needs to rest and we all need to go back home.”
Heredia said his wife, who maintained their campsite while he joined the search, also wouldn't to go home in spite of him asking her to do so.
In mid-December, Clark expressed gratitude to those who reached out to help. “To all the friends, family and people I don’t even know” who gave hope “while I scream and cry for my babies…I will never be able to thank (you) enough.” You “have a special place in my heart always and forever”, Clark posted on Facebook.

There’s no disputing that a trek among the redwood giants in Yosemite National Park and sleeping under a starry night sky in Joshua Tree National Park are some of California’s most magical escapes. The only issue: You’ll have to fight the crowds or get lucky in the permit lottery to do it. But there’s a lesser-known hiking haven where the views are just as epic and the crowds aren’t: Redding.
Dubbed California’s sunniest city, Redding is surrounded by wilderness in every direction. The UV-soaked northern California adventure town sits in the foothills of Mount Shasta. Nearby are Lassen Volcanic National Park, often called “Mini Yellowstone,” and Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, an old mining community where you can still pan for gold. Make Redding your next basecamp if you’re up for long hikes through chaparral woodlands, trails that run alongside geothermal pools, and overnights next to remote mountain lakes. These eight less-traveled-to hikes are beyond worthy of your next adventure. Just be sure to pack sunscreen.
PCT: Etna Summit to Seiad Valley
Location: Klamath National Forest
Trail Type: Point to Point
Mileage: 54.9 miles
Get a bite-sized taste of the PCT through northern California’s Marble Mountains Wilderness on this four to five-day trek. The landscape has changed drastically since the McKinney Fire raged through this region of the Klamath National Forest in July 2022. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth hiking. You’ll witness the rebirth of the forest — thousands of tiny white fir, ponderosa, and lodgepole pine seedlings springing up from the scorched earth. The 56-mile route gains over 7,500 feet of elevation and the last third of the trip (beginning around mile 32) descends into the small town of Seiad Valley. Once you arrive, refuel with a famous PCT tradition: the Seiad Café Pancake Challenge. Finish your 5-inch-tall stack of plate-sized pancakes, and your meal’s on the house.
Butte Lake to Snag Lake Loop
Location: Lassen Volcanic National Park
Trail Type: Loop
Mileage: 13.7 miles
Ranked as one of the least-visited national parks in 2022, Lassen Volcanic National Park flies under the radar despite its stunning volcanic features spread throughout its 170 square miles. Visit for a chance to hike atop an active volcano covered in bubbling mud pots, hydrothermal pools, and roaring fumaroles (steam and volcanic gas vents). The Butte Lake to Snag Lake loop makes a 13-mile circle around the park’s two largest lakes, passing geologic marvels along the way like the ancient frozen flows of the Fantastic Lava Beds. Take a side trip to the top of the 700-foot-tall volcanic remnants of Cinder Cone at the southwest corner of the loop to catch a view of Prospect Peak and Lassen Peak in the distance. You’ll also get a birds-eye look at Snag Lake, the Fantastic Lava Beds, and the Painted Dunes below.
Shasta Bally Trail
Location: Whiskeytown National Recreation Area
Trail Type: Out and Back
Mileage: 10.6 miles
Up for a challenge? Give hiking to the top of Shasta Bally a go. This extremely steep 11-mile trail follows a fire road to the highest peak in Whiskeytown—a once-bustling (and notably rowdy) gold mining town that’s now coveted for its quiet trails and hidden waterfalls. While not technical, this trek will challenge even the fittest of climbers. Start at the Sheep Camp parking area and travel up the mountain, switchbacking through the heart of Whiskeytown National Recreation Area to gain 4,356 feet of elevation before reaching the summit. Much of this trail is exposed — a result of the Carr Fire in 2018 — but that means more opportunity to soak in sights of the chiseled granite peaks of the Trinity Alps on the horizon and the crystal-blue waters of Whiskeytown Lake below.
Bear Lakes Trail
Location: Shasta-Trinity National Forest
Trail Type: Out and Back
Mileage: 11.8 miles
Fifty miles north of Redding, you can take your pick of five designated wilderness areas within the Shasta-Trinity National Forest: Mount Shasta, Trinity Alps, Castle Crags, Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel, and Chanchelulla. While each has its own unique draw — from the towering granite spires of Castle Crags to the waterfall-filled foothills of Mount Shasta — we recommend turning a popular Trinity Alps day-hiking route into a one- or two-night stay. Why? You can soak in total solitude during early-morning cold dips in the high-alpine lake, take an excursion to the lesser-traveled Wee Bear and Little Bear Lakes, and revel at the white granite cliffs from the comfort of your campsite. The journey to camp at Big Bear Lake (5 miles out and 5 miles back) hugs Bear Creek the entire route. Snow typically melts here by mid-June, but with late-season storms becoming the norm, expect the snow to stick around longer into July. Be sure to check conditions before hitting the trail and you can call the Shasta-Trinity National Forest HQ to ask for an update. You’ll need a wilderness permit to camp too. Snag one at the Weaverville or Shasta Lake ranger stations.
Boulder Creek Falls via Boulder Creek Trail

Mileage: 5.1 miles
If you’re looking for a more casual day hike in “Whiskey,” opt for the approachable and beloved hike to Boulder Creek Falls. The moderately steep route through a shaded box canyon follows an old logging road. The trail winds through swaths of regrowing forest full of young pine, sprouting manzanita, and budding fern. You’ll make three stream crossings along the way and enjoy the sights and sounds of cascading waterfalls along Boulder Creek for most of the route. This trail is also known for its firey orange tiger lily and delicate solomon seal blooms during spring. Fun fact: You can test your luck at finding gold in Boulder Creek by purchasing a panning permit for just $1 at the visitor center or online in advance.
Bumpass Hell Trail
Location: Lassen Volcanic National Park
Trail Type: Out and Back
Mileage: 2.65 miles
Hydrothermal hot spot, anyone? This can’t-miss Lassen Volcanic National Park dayhike rivals the sights (and smells) of Yellowstone without the crowds. The 3-mile round-trip route flaunts geothermal wonderland features around every corner, like fluorescent-colored hot springs and sulfuric steam vents. At the start, enjoy views of the deep blue waters of Helen Lake and the snowcapped dome of Lassen Peak to the north. Along the way, tear your eyes away from the trail for views of Brokeoff Mountain, Diamond Peak, Mt. Diller, and Pilot Pinnacle. Once you start smelling the sulfur, you know the Bumpass Hell Basin is close. Travel through the otherworldly scenery on the park’s recently renovated boardwalk before turning back to the trailhead. Note: This trail is only open during summer and fall due to harsh winter conditions.
What to Pack
Summer and fall seasons in northern California are especially hot. Make sure to pack sunscreen, sun shirts, and hats for your hike and drink plenty of water on the trail (the general rule of thumb is a half-liter per hour or more of hiking). The wildfires that decimated much of the old-growth forests and hardwoods throughout the region only exacerbated the heat by leaving hikers exposed to the elements. Salt-heavy snacks and electrolyte drink mixes are also a good idea to replenish sodium levels as you sweat. Black bears are also common in this region. Bring bear spray on all hikes and pack a bear canister for storing food in the backcountry on overnights.

Hang out in Redding for some more adventure before or after your time in the backcountry. Favorite local adventures include the 30-mile e-bike ride to Shasta Dam on the Sacramento River Trail, guided fly fishing on the Sacramento River with The Fly Shop, or mountain biking the seemingly endless miles of single-track on the nearby Swasey, Keswick, and Clear Creek Greenway trails. The brand new Shasta Bike Depot in downtown Redding rents bikes. Another option: Take a day trip to the Lake Shasta Caverns to explore inside 250-million-year-old caves that sit 900 feet above Shasta Lake.

The first punch from an atmospheric river, the first major storm of the season, brought impressive rain and snow totals to the North State on Wednesday, closing Interstate 5 north of Redding and making mountain travel in Siskiyou County and other areas treacherous.
The storm, which also prompted avalanche warnings on Mt. Shasta and disrupted internet service, is expected to bring more rain Thursday and Friday, but snow levels will rise to 8,000 feet over the next few days.
That should bring some relief for travelers going up the I-5 corridor through the Sacramento River Canyon. Heavy snow Wednesday forced authorities to close portions of the freeway between Redding and the Oregon border.

1:30 p.m. Thursday: I-5 traffic north of Redding flows freely again
Caltrans and California Highway Patrol officials are no longer screening vehicles on Interstate 5 north of Redding.
The freeway about 10 miles north of Redding was closed for much of Wednesday before authorities reopened the northbound lanes and started screening vehicles for chains late Wednesday night.
By late Thursday morning, officials had stopped metering vehicles on northbound I-5 at the Fawndale exit.

9:45 a.m. Thursday: Here's how much rain the atmospheric river poured on Redding, so far
Redding is getting hammered with rain since the atmospheric river started Tuesday night.
By Thursday morning, the storm dropped 4.84 inches of rain on the city and 6.6 inches at Shasta Dam, said meteorologist Bill Rasch at the National Weather Service in Sacramento.
The weather service forecasts another two or more inches will fall in Redding by Saturday morning.
That second storm will also bring more snow to the mountains in eastern Shasta County, Rasch said.

8 a.m Thursday: Storm leaves thousands in Shasta, Siskiyou counties without power
Thousands of North State residents were without power Thursday morning, some for the second day in a row.
Pacific Gas and Electric company reported seven storm-related outages affecting at least 328 rural homes and businesses. Most are in northeastern Shasta County, including Burney, Round Mountain and the Lake Britton area. The utility also reported an outage at Whiskeytown.
Closures on Thursday include Montgomery Creek Elementary School (3.5 miles north of Round Mountain), according to the Shasta County Office of Education.
At least 2,100 Pacific Power customers are without power for the second day, most in snowy areas north of the Shasta-Siskiyou counties border to Weed, along the Interstate 5 Corridor, that utility reported.
And approximately 1,539 Trinity County customers are without power, most centered around Weaverville and Lewiston, according to the Trinity Public Utilities District.
Utility companies didn't report time estimates when outages would be fixed, but said crews are working in the area to restore power as soon as possible.

6:45 a.m. Thursday: I-5 traffic north of Redding still being screened; rock slide closes Highway 299 in Trinity County
Vehicles traveling on Interstate 5 north of Redding were still being screened for chains on Thursday morning, according to the California Department of Transportation.
Caltrans said northbound traffic is being metered at the Fawndale exit. Officials are letting 50 vehicles per hour go through.
Chains or snow tires are required on I-5 from 3 miles south of Dunsmuir to 2 miles north of Mount Shasta in Siskiyou County
Chains or snow tires are also required from 2 miles north of Mount Shasta to Weed.
Meanwhile, Highway 299 West is closed to westbound traffic due to a rock slide about 10 miles west of the Highway 3 junction in Trinity County.
Chains or snow tires are required from three miles east of Montgomery Creek to 10 mi west of Burney on Highway 299 East in Shasta County.
On Highway 44, chains are required on all vehicles except 4-wheel-drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels from about 10 miles west of Bogard Ranger Station to the Highway 36 junction in Lassen County.
