In today's world, security is an essential component of life. For individuals, that could mean having a firearm available and a plan of action in place if a break-in or other criminal act occurs. Many business owners in California, however, need more than a simple plan. They need a reliable, proven security guard company in Davis, CA, that can provide them with the armed or unarmed security needed to stay safe and keep criminals at bay. After all, the reality of running a successful business in California is that nefarious actors will do everything in their power to take what's yours. California's overall violent crime rate increased by 1.7%, from 495 crimes per 100,000 residents in 2022 to 503 in 2023. While property crime fell marginally, violent crimes are up in just about every county of The Golden State.

The next minute, they're up at gunpoint and robbed outside of their storefront. At best, the individual loses money. At worst, they get injured or even die. We've all seen similar on the news. It makes sense, then, that more and more business owners and executives are relying on security guards to protect dispensaries, sporting events, concerts, corporate events, and more.

The peace of mind that comes from having security services is both immediate and enduring. There's simply no substitute for the physical and emotional reassurance of knowing that you are protected-whether it's yourself, your family, your valuables, or your business and its employees. Security officers play a crucial role in providing this sense of safety with their specialized skills, especially in tense or threatening situations. If you're looking for an industry-leading security guard company, look no further than Capital security guard.

When you're looking for the best steak in town, you don't go by your local fast-food joint and expect to get anything great. Instead, you go to The Mustard Seed in Davis, CA. When you're looking for a large event to attend, you don't go to a small city in California - you go to LA.

From Coachella to the Academy Awards, Los Angeles and the greater California have more high-profile events than there are palm trees. On the other hand, if you're an organizer, your priority is to ensure that the event is safeguarded from nefarious individuals and criminal activities. Security Guards for Cannabis Companies in Davis, CA

Running a cannabis dispensary can be both hugely rewarding and sketchy. While there's a huge demand for legally grown cannabis, those who own and operate the stores that sell the plant are often at risk. We're talking vandalism, theft, assault, and other crimes that threaten both customers and employees.

While investing in high-quality security systems can help address these issues, they don't always reduce the likelihood of repeat offenses. This brings us to an important question: Should you hire a security guard for your cannabis dispensary? The short answer is yes. That's true even if you're working there on a daily basis. Why? The truth is that it's very difficult to prevent theft entirely.

Failure to take security measures in your dispensary seriously can lead to significant losses, which can happen quickly. With the increase in daytime crime, potential thieves can easily enter your property and steal products - and that's just the start.

How Do Armed and Unarmed Security Guards Help Protect Your Cannabis Investment?

Well-trained security guards play a pivotal role in preventing the theft of money and property at your dispensary. They help reduce vandalism and protect against assaults. A guard is skilled in spotting suspicious behavior and addressing potential issues before they escalate. It's important to note that criminals are often deterred by the presence of armed security personnel. Plus, because guards collaborate with local law enforcement, it becomes easier to resolve any crimes that may occur at your cannabis store.

Unlike security cameras, guards provide a more effective visual deterrent. They ensure that everyone adheres to the established rules and regulations. Any misconduct by employees or customers can have serious repercussions for your cannabis dispensary. A trained guard not only prevents unwanted behavior but can also take disciplinary measures or legal action if required.

How Do You Know if You Need Security Guards for Your Dispensary?

If you own a cannabis shop in California, chances are you've worked long hours and invested a lot of money into making it successful. But that success can come at a steep price, especially when criminals see what you're selling. Sure, you've installed locks on your doors and taken basic steps to prevent crime. But modern-day criminals are savvy and know how to get around standard types of security. That's where security guards for cannabis growers in Davis, CA, start to make a lot of sense.

Keep the following red flags in mind. If your dispensary is growing, it could be time to hire security.

  • Quick Growth or Increase in Income
  • High Foot Traffic
  • Lots of Public Exposure and Media Attention
  • Location of Your Cannabis Company
  • Physical Accessibility

AT SPIEKER AQUATICS COMPLEX | BERKELEY, CALIF.

SATURDAY, FEB. 15 NO. 4 CAL (7-0) VS NO. 9 UC DAVIS (8-5) | 1 PM PT LIVE STATS | LIVE STREAM

The No. 4 California women's water polo team returns to Spieker Aquatics Complex on Saturday to host No. 9 UC Davis at 1 p.m. PT. The Golden Bears have gotten out to a 7-0 start to the season, facing only teams ranked in the top 20 in both the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) and Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) national polls. Seniors Ruby Swadling and Elena Flynn have both scored in every game for the Bears and head into the fourth weekend of the season tied for the team lead with 18 goals.

BEAR NECESSITIES

AGGIE INVITE RECAP Cal earned back-to-back double-digit victories last Saturday at the Aggie Invite, downing No. 19 San Jose State 17-6 and No. 20 Pacific 23-8. The Bears were led by junior Abbi Magee, who poured in seven goals over both games, including a game-high four goals in the win over the Tigers. Cal's contributions came from all over the roster, as five different Bears recorded hat tricks on the day and freshmen Rosalie Hassett finished with five points each.

LEADING THE WAY Cal's offense has been powered by its decorated leading scorers, Swadling and Flynn, both of whom lead the team with 18 goals and three hat tricks apiece. Swadling – a two-time ACWPC All-American who missed the 2024 season to train for the Australia National Team – crossed the 100 career goal milestone with her five-goal season high in the Bears' 16-11 win over No. 7 Long Beach State on Jan. 26. Three-time All-American Flynn – who finished second on the team in 2024 with 44 goals in her debut season at Cal after transferring from UC Irvine – opened the year with a pair of four-goal outings and has a team-high six multi-goal efforts.

2025 Cal Season Stats

STRONG START This is the ninth time in program history that the Bears have started a season with a record of 7-0 or better. With a win on Saturday, the Bears will improve to 8-0 for the fourth time since 2017.

GOLD MEDAL BEARS In November, Julia Bonaguidi and Rosalie Hassett competed for Team USA in the 2024 Pan-American Championships, putting away seven and six goals, respectively, on their way to an 18-5 win over Argentina in the final. They became the first Bears to win gold at the tournament since current Cal associate head coach Heather Petri and Elsie Windes in 2011.

Hassett and Bonaguidi have carried that momentum into the season, putting away 10 and nine goals apiece through seven games. Hassett is the only Bear other than Swading and Flynn to score in every game.

2024 RECAP Boasting the nation's best defense throughout the year, Cal finished as the runner-up in both the NCAA and MPSF Championships, advancing to the NCAA Championship final for the second time in program history. The Bears posted their second straight 19-win season, going 19-7 (.731), good for their highest win percentage since 2018. At the heart of their success was the play of graduated senior goalkeeper Isabel Williams, who set the team's all-time career saves record on her way to becoming the first Bear in program history to win the prestigious Peter J. Cutino Award, given to the top player in the NCAA.

HALL OF FAME COACHING STAFF Cal head coach Coralie Simmons and Petri are among the most decorated figures in the sport. Simmons – one of the great trailblazers of the women's water polo world who earned two NCAA Player of the Year awards while competing for UCLA, won three NCAA Championships and an Olympic silver medal with Team USA – was one of five members in the 39th induction class of the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame in 2023. Her 138 wins at Cal rank second in program history. Last May, she became the first female head coach in NCAA history to reach the NCAA championship game. Petri – the only four-time female Olympian in Cal history – was named to the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2023. Joining them on the staff for the fourth straight year is assistant coach Lance Morrison, who played Division I water polo at Pacific.

Game Helps Vanilla Farmers in Madagascar Explore the Tradeoffs of Livelihood, Food Security and Biodiversity

News

Vanilla is vital to the livelihoods of farmers in Madagascar, where the globally popular dessert ingredient is the country’s No. 1 export. A fun, thought-provoking game designed by a team of scientists and played by Malagasy vanilla farmers reveals the challenges of payment programs that incentivize forest conservation in the region, according to a study led by the University of California, Davis.

The study, published in the February issue of the journal Biological Conservation, found that even amid volatile markets and climate uncertainties, farmers highly value their vanilla crops, which are tied not only to their livelihoods but also their cultural identity. Yet they also recognize the importance of a balanced land-use approach.

“Vanilla farmers often cultivate far more than just vanilla,” said lead author Marie Fleming, a Ph.D. student in Ecology in the UC Davis Department of Environmental Science and Policy. “They grow within rainfed agroecosystems and deeply understand the value of maintaining a healthy mosaic landscape—one that balances food crops, cash crops, and forests. However, achieving this balance while meeting conservation goals can be challenging as farmers face the pressure to expand croplands.”

FallowMe game

The authors worked with 204 farmers in Madagascar using an experimental tablet-based game called FallowMe. The game, developed by experts at the University of Antananarivo, Madagascar; Cornell University; and UC Davis, helped farmers simulate and explore their real-world dilemma: Stick with vanilla, diversify crops, conserve forest, or expand farmland to offset price drops amid a volatile vanilla market.

Such choices are crucial, as 70% of Malagasy farmers face food insecurity. Integrating fruit trees, food crops, and other cash crops within vanilla systems, presents a potential solution for farmers to enhance resilience, yet viable markets to support diverse and seasonal crops are not well established.

The study’s results showed that while farmers highly valued vanilla monocrops, they were indifferent to diversifying the crop. In the game, a drop in the price of vanilla led farmers to diversify their crops and land uses. Paying farmers to conserve also increased forest vegetation, but it decreased crop diversity on the farm.

Payments also had unintended consequences. In the game, some young farmers expanded farmland onto public lands while benefiting from payments on their own plots. Payments also promoted less diverse landscapes composed primarily of vanilla crops and forests rather than integrating other crops that could promote food security.

Beyond payment programs

"While payment schemes can work, they alone cannot address the root causes that threaten both farmer livelihoods and the forests on which they depend,” Fleming said. “We must consider farmers' visions for a balanced landscape and support the most vulnerable populations, such as youth and women, who are most reactive to shocks.”

Felming said she hopes the work provides insights into how these factors can inform policy and the design of pro-conservation payment schemes.

“Addressing these challenges may need to involve enhancing the sustainability of each element of the existing mosaic system simultaneously," she said.

The study sheds light on the importance of market dynamics and the role of payment schemes to help encourage forest conservation among farmers that rely on cash crops like vanilla. It also shows how games can be a low-risk, low-cost tool to better predict and understand various policy interventions.

The research was funded by USAID’s Partnership for Enhanced Engagement in Research (PEER).

Additional co-authors include Andrew Bell of Cornell University, Henintsoa Rakoto Harison and O. Sarobidy Rakotonarivo of University of Antananarivo, James Herrera and Randall Kramer of Duke University, and A. Bradley Duthie of University of Stirling.

The University of California, Davis, welcomed one of its most diverse entering classes and became eligible to be one of the nation’s few research-intensive universities designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution, or HSI, as it enrolled a record 41,239 students in fall 2024.

The University of California released systemwide enrollment statistics today (Jan. 7).

At Davis, overall enrollment — including undergraduate, graduate and professional students as well as 1,174 veterinary and medical residents and interns — increased by 391 students, or 0.9%, over fall 2023.

UC Davis enrolled 9,443 new undergraduates: 6,767 as first-year students direct from high school, 2,656 as transfer students and 20 others seeking a second undergraduate degree.

HSI eligibility

In late October, UC Davis announced Latinx enrollment had reached a new peak of about 8,100 students or 25.1% of undergraduate full-time-equivalent, or FTE, students. That surpasses the U.S. Department of Education’s criteria of at least 25% for HSIs.

The campus has long-sought HSI designation to underscore its commitment to serving Latinx students. The status would also make the university eligible to apply for competitive grants from the federal government and foundations to support student success, innovation and institutional transformation benefiting all students.

While the enrollment threshold for HSI status is calculated using FTE numbers for new and continuing undergraduates, the University of California statistics, based on headcount, do demonstrate the growing representation of Latinx students at Davis.

Among new California undergraduates, for example, the Hispanic/Latino(a) group accounted for more than three in every 10 students.

The campus already secured the federal government’s status as a Minority Serving Institution in 2019 when it was designated an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution.

Representation

The new undergraduates come from 56 of California’s 58 counties, 47 states and U.S. territories, and 48 countries. Approximately 83.4% are California residents, 4.6% are U.S. domestic students from outside California, and 12.1% are international students.

Among new California undergraduates, the percentage of students from historically underrepresented groups (African American, American Indian, Hispanic/Latino(a) and Pacific Islander) increased to 37.5% — the highest percentage in more than 25 years. Last fall, the percentage was 36.2%

Among the new students, 40.8% indicated they would be in the first generation of their family to graduate from a four-year university. About 31.3% of all new undergraduates were considered low income, and 38.8% were recipients of the federal Pell Grant for low-income students.

Robert Penman, executive director of Undergraduate Admissions, said the average grade point average, or GPA, for first-year students was 4.04, and the median was 4.08. More than 75% of first-year students had a weighted GPA above 3.92.

The average transfer GPA was 3.59, and the median was 3.62. More than 75% of newly enrolled transfer students had a GPA above 3.38.

Calculations for planning purposes

Counted among the university’s total enrollment, some students study at the Sacramento campus, facilities across California and beyond. UC Davis also tracks student population averaged over the three quarters of an academic year for implementing the 2018 Long Range Development Plan, or LRDP, capacity of 39,000 students at the Davis campus. In keeping with the last few years, the LRDP three-quarter average is estimated to be around 37,000 for 2024-25.
