The Giants are certainly hopeful that they are taking steps in the right direction after landing shortstop Willy Adames in free agency. The two sides agreed to a seven-year, $182 million deal, the largest contract in franchise history.
Justin Verlander looks to have something left in the tank, but he will be 42 years old when Opening Days rolls around and isn’t a long-term answer for the club.
Finding long-term answers is certainly easier said than done in San Francisco.
Developing talent has not come easily for the franchise, evident by their presence or lack thereof, on the top 100 prospects list that Keith Law of The Athletic compiled.
The Giants are one of five teams in the MLB that had only one player make the list, along with the Atlanta Braves, Athletics, Houston Astros and Los Angeles Angels.
Atlanta and Houston being on the one-and-done list isn’t too shocking given they have spent recent history vying for and winning championships. That is a costly venture, as prospects have regularly been on the move to bolster the Major League club.
San Francisco, who has made the postseason once in the last eight years, being on that list is certainly a cause for concern.
That puts an immense amount of pressure on first baseman Bryce Eldridge, as he is the only long-term upgrade the team has waiting in the wings currently in their farm system with star potential.
There are always prospects who will emerge during the season, but one of Posey’s long-term goals as the leader of the front office has to be to start bolstering the organizational depth and farm systems.

New San Francisco Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey wasted little time putting his imprint on the franchise.
Early in his first free agency leading the front office, he made a huge splash, agreeing to a deal with shortstop Willy Adames.
That was identified as the position that needed to be upgraded the most this winter and they went to the top of the market to get a deal done. The two sides agreed to a seven-year, $182 million contract, the largest in franchise history.
He has yet to suit up for a game with his new team but he has already made his presence felt. He wasted very little time looking to help his new team upgrade the roster.
Before free-agent ace starting pitcher Corbin Burnes signed a contract with their rivals, the Arizona Diamondbacks, Adames attempted to get his former Milwaukee Brewers teammate to join him in the Bay Area.
Offseason workouts were held at the team’s training facility at Papego Park in Phoenix, Ariz., a few weeks ago and Adames attended. Those are optional workouts in which veterans don't always participate.
Looking to build chemistry and cohesion with his new franchise, the star shortstop decided to make a quick return to the Dominican Republic and stay in Arizona permanently instead of waiting until spring training next month.
Adames was also part of the contingent, which included relief pitcher Camilo Doval and Jerar Encarnacion, who visited the Felipe Alou Baseball Academy in the Dominican Republic to meet the new group of international free agents who were signed, including 17-year-old Josuar Gonzalez.
"It was great to be there for them," Adames told NBC Sports Bay Area over the weekend, via Taylor Wirth. "It was great to see, obviously, the complex, but to get to know the guys there. Obviously the young kids that just got signed, for those kids that's an important day. I was there when I was 16 in that position and I wish I had a big-leaguer on my signing day, it would have been amazing.
"I wanted to give that to them so they can appreciate that day and having a familiar face from the organization. I think it was just a great idea and when they asked me to go I was like 'yeah, of course.' it was cool."
That wasn’t a trip Adames had to make. With only a few weeks remaining in his offseason to take some time to himself, no one would have blamed him for staying home and doing something else.
But, he knew how much it would mean to the youngsters and is looking to make as positive of an impact as possible with his new team.
It is going to take more than just Adames for the Giants to return to prominence, but he was an excellent first addition in the new era under Posey.

The San Jose metropolitan area has for years had the highest home values in the United States. That seems unlikely to change anytime soon, with the area’s typical value reaching another record high at the end of 2024.
The San Jose metro area, which consists of Santa Clara and San Benito counties, had a typical home value of $1.59 million in December 2024, according to estimates from real estate brokerage Zillow. That was by far the highest of any metro area in Zillow’s data, which includes values of single-family homes, condominiums and small multifamily buildings.
Values in the San Jose metro area rose by nearly 8%, more than $100,000, from December 2023 — the fastest rate among the 50 largest areas.
The continued rise of San Jose metro area home values comes as strong stock growth makes high-earning investors and tech workers even wealthier, with the share price for Santa Clara-based tech giant Nvidia surging in 2024. President Donald Trump’s friendliness toward AI and crypto has also fueled enthusiasm for Silicon Valley, real estate agents said, even as tech layoffs and a lack of new housing put homeownership out of reach for some residents.
“What I’m seeing is a lot of optimism in the market,” said Sandy Jamison, a broker with Tuscana Properties in Campbell. “There are people who are far more excited about the next four years … about their overall financial situation and where it’s going, so they’re out there and buying.”

The San Francisco metro area had the second-highest home value of the largest U.S. metro areas, at about $1.1 million. But it saw a relatively modest increase from 2023 to 2024, at just above 2%. And Zillow actually expects the region, which includes San Francisco as well as Alameda, Marin, Contra Costa and San Mateo counties, to see a slight dip in home values this year.
The San Jose metro area’s home value growth was driven chiefly by Santa Clara, Cupertino and Campbell, which all saw increases exceeding 10% year over year. Homes in San Benito County, which tend to be cheaper, saw much lower rates of growth.

With mortgage rates still high and unlikely to get much lower, many would-be homebuyers are priced out of the market, said Jamison, the Campbell broker. But not everyone is.
“Even though we may not have 30 to 40 offers on a house, there’s still one or two who will buy it,” she explained. “Until we see supply change, we’re not going to see a huge reduction in values.”
John Young, a Menlo Park-based Realtor with Golden Gate Sotheby’s International Realty, said the high rates mean many Silicon Valley homeowners — like their peers throughout California — are holding on to their properties even if they would otherwise move. That has kept supply low and competition high, with cash buyers making up large shares of purchases.
Enthusiasm within the tech industry, which is poised to benefit from the Trump administration’s support for cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence, is another boon for Silicon Valley home values, Young said. So is Elon Musk’s newfound power within the federal government.
“I’m not saying it’s for the most noble of reasons … but in a world where the rich get richer,” Silicon Valley prices will continue to rise, Young added.

The debt ledger for the distinctive 345 California Center, the San Francisco high-rise marked by its twin flagpoles, now reads 'paid in full' following a substantial financial move by its owner, Metropolis Investment Holdings, an affiliate of a Chicago-based firm. The full $150 million debt on the property was cleared after the owner settled the tab with Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, according to the SF Examiner. This achievement places the tower in a relatively exclusive and enviable position as numerous other properties struggle amidst high office vacancy rates in the city, while 345 California Center boasts many amenities enticing to tenants.
Metropolis showcases a debt-free portfolio that spans approximately 6 million square feet of premium Class A office towers across several key cities beyond San Francisco. The portfolio also includes a range of hotels, retail spaces, parking facilities, and land sites, which can be perused on the company's website, according to details provided by ConnectCRE. Not resting on their laurels, Metropolis's managing director, Tom Dempsey, spoke on their business approach, emphasizing asset quality and market-adaptive leasing sans overly intricate financing.
Concurrent with their debt announcement, 345 California Center has also welcomed a new tenant, Degenkolb Engineers, who will take over 17,000 square feet of the building, as Dempsey told ConnectCRE, "Our long-term hold approach puts us in the enviable position of having a low-cost basis, and paying off the loan reaffirms our commitment to the San Francisco office market." The leasing negotiations were handled by Cushman & Wakefield for the tower and JLL for Degenkolb Engineers.

It has been a busy offseason for the San Francisco Giants, who have been trying to snap out of their funk for the last few years.
For several seasons, the Giants have been stuck in mediocrity, with the exception of their incredible 2021 season in which they won 107 games. But that ended with an early playoff exit.
This is certainly a tough place to be as a franchise, but the hope is that the new president of baseball operations Buster Posey can help them break through.
One of the reasons for the struggles over the last few years has been their inability to sign top free agents. The hope was that bringing in Posey would help with that.
So far this winter, he was able to sign two notable free agents, Willy Adames and Justin Verlander. San Francisco was in on Corbin Burnes, but he ultimately decided to go to the Arizona Diamondbacks, which is near where his offseason home.
The Giants still could make a couple of more additions before spring training to try and continue to close the gap between them and some of the other teams in the challenging National League West.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report recently wrote about some offseason decisions that have the potential to crash and burn. For the Giants, he highlighted the move to bring in Adames to a long-term deal.
“In the spirit of attempting to identify offseason moves (or non-moves) that could end poorly, though, the Giants paying top dollar to finally land a top-five free agent after all of the marquee close calls in recent years has the potential to blow up in their face," he wrote.
Adames was certainly a signing that made a lot of sense for San Francisco, but like with any signing, there is risk. While the shortstop deserved to get paid, he has notably never been selected to an All-Star team, and while that isn’t the only measuring stick for success, it is notable to mention.
On the field, he did struggle defensively in 2024 for the Milwaukee Brewers. Luckily, he will have Matt Chapman next to him at third base for a long time, and the Gold Glover can cover up some of those mistakes. But, again, this is an area of concern.
The real concern is how his batting average and power will translate this into playing 81 games in San Francisco. As one of the best pitchers parks in the league, slugging is not an easy thing to do in the Bay Area.
It’s been since 2004 when the Giants last had a batter hit 30 home runs, and one of the reasons why they signed Adames was to snap that streak. For a hitter that relies on slugging and power to provide value, a dip in that category could result in this being a move that crashes and burns.
