A raging wildfire in Southern California has prompted evacuations and damaged homes in Malibu, the iconic, affluent, and mountainous beach community northwest of Los Angeles.
The fast-moving wildfire sprang up late Monday night had exploded in size by Tuesday morning, burning more than 2,000 acres and forcing firefighters to go door-to-door to evacuate parts of Malibu.
Malibu has become a hot-spot of celebrity real estate, with reports of Beyoncé and Charlie Sheen owning property in the area. It wasn't immediately clear whether any of their properties were threatened by the fire.
The Franklin Fire had burned 100 acres when firefighters were dispatched at 10:52 p.m. Monday, the Los Angeles County Fire Department told USA TODAY in an email. By Tuesday morning, it was at 2,600 acres as the blaze spread through the Santa Monica mountains to the Malibu coast with 0% containment, CalFire and local National Weather Service officials said.
Some homes have been destroyed in the fire, but officials do not have the exact number of damaged structures yet, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone said Tuesday morning. There also were no reports of deaths or serious injuries, he said. One sheriff deputy's cruiser was damaged in the fire.
"Because of the great work of the firefighters that were on scene, we have only a minimal number of homes destroyed," Marrone said.
The fire was fueled by strong Santa Ana winds and low humidity, creating red flag conditions in the region. A red flag warning will remain in effect through at least Wednesday and maybe longer as the powerful winds linger, Joe Sirard, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Los Angeles, told USA TODAY Tuesday.
"We’re still getting gusting and erratic winds as we're expecting more winds up to 50 mph overnight in the highest elevations of the fire area," Sirard said. "It's just a very dangerous situation. The crews are obviously doing their best to fight the fire, but it’s still hard to contain at this time."
Marrone said earlier Tuesday, "We remain under an immediate threat because of the red flag conditions."
The fire started near Pepperdine University in Malibu, KTLA-TV reported. It's threatening structures including the Malibu Pier, which is 2 miles away from the university, according to the City of Malibu.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to CalFire.

Homes, other buildings threatened
Multiple areas in the City of Malibu are under mandatory evacuation, according to the city's website. Most of Malibu had its power shut off while firefighters worked to gain control of the fire, and all schools there were closed Tuesday. Mayor Pro Tem Marianne Riggins said City Hall was also in the mandatory evacuation zone.
Pepperdine University lifted its shelter-in-place status and said the campus was safe for residents, but said the school community was urged to remain on campus and leave Malibu roads clear for emergency personnel. Power was out for most of campus, the university said.
Firefighters and sheriff's deputies have gone door-to-door to evacuate residents, officials said. Sheriff Robert Luna said at a Tuesday news briefing that there are more than 8,000 structures within the affected zone. Of those, more than 2,000 are under mandatory evacuation orders and roughly another 6,000 were under evacuation warnings.
Homes in the Malibu area have been damaged by wildfires in the past, and celebrities have been among those impacted. In 2018, the massive Woolsey Fire made headlines for burning homes belonging to Miley Cyrus, Neil Young and Gerard Butler.

The fire was discovered after the National Weather Service issued a red flag warning over the weekend for most of Ventura and Los Angeles counties because of critical fire conditions expected to occur from Monday to Wednesday, reported the Ventura County Star, a part of the USA TODAY Network.

A wildfire broke out Monday night in Malibu, California, spreading rapidly on hillsides a few miles from Pepperdine University.
A Santa Ana kicked up late Monday and will continue into Tuesday night over portions of Southern California. A fire near Southern California’s downtown Malibu ignited late Monday and is spreading quickly, prompting mandatory evacuations and threatening structures, including the city’s iconic Malibu Pier. Nearby Pepperdine University canceled classes Tuesday and ordered students to shelter in place. The inferno is already closing in on 2,000 acres, CALFire said.
While this Santa Ana is not an extreme wind event, AccuWeather meteorologists believe there is still be some risks to lives and property. A building area of high pressure across the Great Basin will be the driving force behind the gusty winds. The rising pressure forces a rush of wind over the ridges, down the slopes and through the northeast-to-southwest-orientated valleys and canyons in Southern California.
Into Tuesday night, wind gusts from the northeast in many areas will range between 40 and 60 mph, which is strong enough to break tree limbs and knock down power lines. The AccuWeather Local StormMax™ wind gust for this event is 90 mph.
When power lines come down, sparks are sometimes produced that can trigger rapidly growing wildfires, like the Franklin Fire burning in Malibu. Those working with power equipment should use caution during the wind event.
Gusts will be strong enough to knock over outdoor grills and carry embers from campfires to dry brush areas where a fire can start and spread out of control quickly.
Where the winds blow across highways, they can also topple high-profile vehicles such as 18-wheelers, campers and box trucks. Gusty winds can also topple or blow away holiday decorations.
Because of the topography, much of downtown Los Angeles will be protected from the strong winds, but moderate gusts can reach all the way to the coast, such as in Oxnard and Newport Beach, California.
The dry northeasterly winds will help warm up much of Southern California. On Wednesday, Los Angeles temperatures are projected to rebound to the mid-70s F.
By the middle of the week, the area of high pressure will have moved well inland over the West, and the strong northeast winds produced by rising pressure in Southern California will ease. Breezes will pick up from the south and west by Thursday as a storm moves inland over the Pacific Northwest.
That storm is forecast to bring in cooler air with low-elevation rain and mountain snow to Northern California on Thursday.

Parts of Malibu are under mandatory evacuation as firefighters try to control the Franklin Fire, according to officials. As of noon Tuesday., the fire has led to minimal damage to structures, but no one had been injured, officials said during a news conference.
The fire, located on South Malibu Canyon Road, started near Pepperdine University in Malibu, reported local outlet KTLA 5, and is impacting other structures, like the Malibu Pier, which is 2 miles away from the university, according to the City of Malibu.

When did the Franklin Fire near Malibu start?
The so-called Franklin Fire ignited at approximately 10:52 p.m. Monday. Firefighters with the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded near Malibu Canyon Road, just north of the Pepperdine University campus, according to reports from the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The city of Malibu has been put under mandatory evacuation orders as the fire poses a threat to homes and other structures, according to the city of Malibu’s X account.
The fire erupted during extreme Santa Ana winds. The National Weather Service issued "a particularly dangerous" red-flag warning for much of the local area for the second time in a little over a month. Those are triggered during extreme conditions, ones that can cause fires to ignite easily and spread quickly, officials said.
The warning took effect Monday night and was expected to remain at least into Tuesday afternoon. The forecast called for gusts up to 80 mph in some wind-prone spots. Humidity levels could dip into single digits.
Portions of Pacific Coast Highway – from Topanga Canyon Boulevard, also known as State Route 27 to Kanan Dume Road in Malibu – were closed as a result of the fire.
Pepperdine University and all Malibu schools have closed for the day, according to the city of Malibu’s X account. Pepperdine has a shelter-in-place order for about 700 students.
An evacuation center has been set up at the Palisade Recreational Center on 851 Alma Real Drive, Pacific Palisades.

In addition, a six-mile portion of Pacific Coast Highway was ordered closed east of Corral Canyon Road and west of Las Flores Canyon Road, the city of Malibu reported. Las Virgenes Road is closed south of Mulholland Highway to Pacific Coast Highway.

Red Flag and Shelter in Place Warnings
The Franklin Fire ignited after the National Weather Service issued a red flag warning over the weekend for most of Ventura and Los Angeles counties through 6 p.m. Wednesday, the Ventura County Star, a part of the USA TODAY Network reported.
At the Pepperdine University campus in Malibu, campus officials gave students a shelter-in-place warning.

According to Accuweather, Santa Ana winds occur when air from a region of high pressure over the dry Great Basin region of the U.S. flows westward toward lower pressure off the California coast. As that cool interior air flows over and through mountain passes, it accelerates, sinks, and compresses. The winds typically happen during the fall months and continue through winter and into early spring. Santa Ana winds can reach up to 70 miles per hour.
On Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service's San Diego office reported that Santa Ana winds were peaking in strength, and some windy spots had seen gusts over 70 miles per hour.

LOS ANGELES - Another round of potentially damaging Santa Ana winds will batter much of Southern California into the middle of the week, combining with low humidity to create dangerous wildfire conditions.
The Santa Ana winds could bring gusts up to 80 mph to parts of the region, prompting a "Particularly Dangerous Situation" (PDS) Fire Weather Warning for much of the Santa Ana wind corridor of Los Angeles and Ventura counties through Tuesday. The PDS Warning extends through Wednesday for the Susana Mountains. Farther south, San Diego County is also under a Fire Weather Warning.

NOAA's Storm Prediction Center is forecasting "extreme" fire weather conditions for Tuesday in places like Santa Clarita, Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, Moorpark, and Santa Paula along the Southern California coast.
Those areas will remain under a standard red flag warning until 6 p.m. Wednesday, along with the eastern San Fernando Valley, San Gabriel Valley and the 5 Freeway corridor.
Winds will decrease by Wednesday afternoon. However, the humidity will stay extremely low.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department issued a statement saying the agency has "implemented its augmented staffing plan by ordering additional staffing and pre-deployment of ground and aerial resources throughout the county."
This comes as the Franklin Fire burning in Malibu has scorched over 2,000 acres, forcing evacuations.
As is typical during red flag conditions, Southern California Edison advised thousands of customers that they could be subject to power cuts designed to prevent electrical equipment from sparking wildfires during threatening winds.
Santa Ana winds blow from the Santa Ana Mountains in Southern California, bringing in hot, dry air from east of the mountains. They can occur at any time of year but are more common during cooler weather from fall through winter.

Officials give update on Franklin Fire in Malibu

Around 10:50 p.m. Monday, crews with the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a call about the blaze, dubbed the "Franklin Fire."
In the latest update provided by fire officials around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, the fire had grown to 2,200 acres, up from 1,822 acres, with 0% containment.
Residents have been asked by officials not to use their sprinklers or irrigate their lawns as that water will be used in the firefight.
LA County Sheriff Robert Luna said in an update Tuesday morning that 18,000 people have been impacted by the fire and that there are 8,100 structures in the affected area. Of those structures, 2,043 are under evacuation orders and 6,046 are under evacuation warnings.

The Franklin Fire in Malibu has burned more than 2,200 acres, triggering evacuations for those in the area.
Also during Tuesday morning's news conference, LA County Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone said a minimal number of homes were destroyed but at this point, they are unable to provide an exact number. In addition, no fatalities or serious injuries have been reported.
Marrone added that the area remains "under an immediate threat" due to Red Flag conditions.

The latest forecast for the greater Los Angeles area, including beaches, valleys and desert regions.
The fire broke out as parts of Los Angeles County were under a Red Flag Warning. The weather alert was issued for the San Gabriel Mountains, Santa Monica Mountains, Santa Clarita Valley, Western San Fernando Valley, Calabasas, the 14 Freeway corridor, as well as the Malibu coast.
FOX 11 Meteorologist Maria Quiban said the dry conditions with strong wind, combined with the terrain and vegetation of dry brush made for the "perfect recipe." She added there were prevailing winds from the upper levels of the atmosphere and that wind gusts have ranged between 45 and 55 mph, and even up to 80 mph in isolated areas.
A Red Flag Warning remains in effect through 2 p.m. Tuesday, while a High Wind Warning remains in place through 10 p.m.
EVACUATION ORDER
Marrone said those in the evacuation order area should leave now and those in the evacuation warning areas should prepare to leave when that warning transitions to an order.

PCH closed amid Franklin Fire
Pacific Coast Highway remains closed as a fire continues to burn in Malibu north of the Malibu University campus.
It is unknown when Pacific Coast Highway will reopen to the public.
SCHOOL CLOSURES
Pepperdine University canceled classes and final exams for Tuesday, December 10. Shortly before the news of classes being called off, the school issued a shelter-in-place order on campus, which impacted about 800 students. At the time of the shelter mandate, Pepperdine required all community members on the Malibu campus to hunker down in the Tyler Campus Center or Payson Library.

Pepperdine University students sheltering inside the campus' buildings watched the fire burn the City of Malibu from inside the windows.
FOX 11 spoke with Pepperdine University students sheltering inside one of the libraries. Gabrielle Salgado said students were inside a fire-resistant campus library wearing masks as they watched the fire spreading through the building's windows.
On Tuesday morning, the shelter-in-place order had been lifted and students were allowed to return to on-campus housing.
In addition, between the firefight and poor air quality, all schools are closed in Malibu on Tuesday, Dec. 10.
EVACUATION SITE
The Red Cross opened a site for all impacted by the fire at the Palisades Recreation Center located at 851 Alma Real Drive.
A site for small animals has been established at Aguora Animal Shelter at 29525 Aguora Road in Aguora Hills.
Also, a large animal shelter opened at Pierce College at 6201 Winnetka Avenue in Woodland Hills.
POWER SHUT-OFFS
